How Real Conversations Help Youth Explore Meaningful Career Paths
Choosing a career path can feel overwhelming for many young people. Without real-world exposure, careers remain abstract – reduced to job titles, assumptions, and incomplete information. Informational interviews help bridge this gap. By connecting youth with professionals in meaningful, one-on-one conversations, these interviews bring careers to life, offering insight, context, and a clearer sense of what different paths can truly look like.
What Is an Informational Interview?
An informational interview is a structured conversation where a student speaks with a professional to learn about their career path, industry, and day-to-day work. Unlike a job interview, the goal is not employment; it’s exploration, learning, and connection.
Career development experts consistently highlight informational interviews as an effective tool for career exploration. These conversations help individuals:
- Understand real job expectations
- Build professional networks
- Make informed career decisions
- Gain confidence speaking with professionals and employers
How Informational Interviews Work in Reboot Plus
In Reboot Plus, informational interviews are carefully facilitated to ensure students feel prepared and supported.
Participants:
- Research careers and industries
- Develop thoughtful, personalized questions
- Practice communication and professional etiquette
- Engage in one-on-one or small group conversations with professionals
Facilitators connect students with professionals in fields of their interest. As the interviews are conduct online, students are connected to professionals locally, nationally and even internationally.
In our blog, Reboot Plus in Newfoundland and Labrador program facilitator Perry White explains:
“They get to hear stories of how people moved forward in their life and into their chosen careers. Where possible, we like to link youth to people from our area so that they can see firsthand people doing well as a result of completing high school and getting some post secondary training.”
Why Informational Interviews Matter for Youth
-
Turning Career Ideas into Real Possibilities
Many students struggle with career decisions because they lack exposure. Informational interviews bring careers to life.
In Five Years Later: A Student Reflects on the Lasting Impact of Reboot Plus, a participant shared:
“That real-world exposure made career exploration feel grounded, supportive, and realistic, rather than abstract or overwhelming.
Instead of guessing what a job might be like, students gain firsthand insight into daily tasks, workplace culture, and required skills.
-
Building Clarity and Confidence
Career uncertainty often leads to indecision or choosing a path that isn’t the right fit. Informational interviews help students refine their direction early.
In How Reboot Plus Changed My Life: A Personal Journey, one student wrote:
“Speaking with professionals in careers I was interested in helped me understand what I did and didn’t want to do. These conversations provided clarity and helped me avoid committing to a path that wasn’t the right fit.”
This kind of clarity is important. Early career exploration reduces costly changes in education and improves long-term satisfaction.
-
Developing Communication and Professional Skills
Beyond career exploration, informational interviews help students build essential workplace skills:
- Asking thoughtful questions
- Active listening
- Professional communication
- Confidence in new environments
These skills support success in both education and employment.
-
Encouraging Reflection and Self-Discovery
Informational interviews create meaningful moments for professionals.
As one professional shared, in 3 Reasons Why I am Participating in Informational Interviews with Youth:
“One of the students asked me ‘What do you dislike most about your job?’ Usually we receive questions on the more positive spectrum, but this question really pushed me to reflect on what I currently dislike and what I can do to improve.”
These authentic conversations create space for honesty, reflection, and deeper understanding on both sides. Information interviews impact and benefit employers and professionals too. Read our next blog to learn how.
