Finding My Way to Reboot Plus
In March 2022, I joined the Reboot Plus program at the College of the North Atlantic. At the time, I was struggling with anxiety and depression. A family friend introduced me to the program. I wasn’t originally from Stephenville or familiar with many people in the area, and I saw it as an opportunity to get out of the house, meet new people, and find a sense of direction.
Overcoming High School Challenges
My high school experience had been difficult. I only made it to grade 10 before my mental health challenges became overwhelming. So, when I first joined Reboot Plus, I was nervous. But Perry, our instructor, created a welcoming, stress-free environment where I felt comfortable. I met others who had also struggled in high school, and in time, those classmates became friends—one even became my best friend and, eventually, my girlfriend.
Exploring Different Career Paths
The program offered hands-on experiences across various fields. We participated in classes like firefighting, where we tried on gear; film, where some classmates got to be in an end-of-year project; baking, where we made our own creations; and paramedic training, where we practiced CPR in an ambulance. These experiences helped me explore different career paths and discover what truly interested me.
A Unique Learning Experience
Reboot Plus was a completely different experience from high school. The small class size made it feel personal, and I was able to form real connections with both my classmates and Perry. The program also provided practical learning opportunities, such as first aid, WHMIS, and firearms training, which added to my skill set and boosted my confidence.
My “Aha” Moment
One of the biggest turning points for me was realizing what I truly wanted to do. Initially, I thought I wanted to pursue digital animation, but after visiting the class, I found it wasn’t for me. However, when we visited the baking program and met the instructor, I had a completely different experience. I had so much fun making biscuits and could actually see myself building a future in baking. That moment helped me decide to pursue it as a career.
The Value of Informational Interviews
Another valuable part of the program was the informational interviews. Speaking with professionals in careers I was interested in helped me understand what I did and didn’t want to do. These conversations provided clarity and helped me avoid committing to a path that wasn’t the right fit.
Support That Made a Difference
Through it all, the support from Perry made a huge difference. He guided us through our options, showed us how to achieve our goals, and encouraged us to believe in ourselves. Thanks to this program, I was able to finish high school and set a clear path for my future.
Looking Ahead
Now, my goal is to complete the baking program and, maybe one day, start my own small business. Reboot Plus didn’t just help me find a career—it changed my life and set me on a path to success instead of a downward spiral. If you’re looking for a fresh start and a chance to discover your passion, I highly recommend this program.
